Spontaneous Christmas.

Ever come across those moments of spontaneous, unplanned bliss? A little delightful surprise of life you didn’t anticipate?

I’m not talking about meeting your true love in the produce aisle or experiencing a miracle pregnancy that the doctors said wasn’t possible.

I mean the feeling of peeling the clear plastic protection from a kitchen appliance you didn’t realize was there when you first unpackaged it three years ago. You notice it slightly fraying at a corner and excitedly begin pulling back the thin layer. That clean, streamlined removal revealing a stunning curve that could blind you with its shine making your item brand new all over again.

This is life’s spontaneous Christmas.

How about when every kernel of your popcorn pops and not one is burnt? What witchcraft is required to attain this level of skill and power? Is that course available via Class Pass? Spontaneous Christmas.

I can feel the lips of heaven kissing my forehead when I eye an article of clothing in a store and the last size available is mine. Upgrade this level of blessedness to double cheek smooches when this is a thrift store scenario and the item is of perfect proportions. Spontaneous Christmas.

A beyond successful layover experience consists of the following things that if any are fulfilled, I declare spontaneous Christmas and if all are fulfilled, I’ve passed on and arrived in the Promised Land:

1.     Getting to your destination on time

2.     A short enough layover that you’re not taking up temporary residence in an awful airport chair, but long enough that you’re not awkwardly trying to speed-limp with your pudgy luggage to your connecting flight

3.     A convenient moment to relieve yourself in peace, and depending on the length of travel time, brush your teeth

4.     A coffee shop en route to your next gate where you can buy a black coffee and pastry because the inflight meals that will be offered to you later are both repulsive in price and taste and no one can survive off the free pretzel packs

5.     A call for carry-on’s to be checked in for free due to lack of overhead storage space (this is raffle-winning level luck)

6.     Once boarded, realizing that you have the entire row to yourself

Spontaneous Christmas.

How about when you know exactly the restaurant you’re in the mood to eat from and the people accompanying you wholeheartedly feel the same? Has this ever happened? To me, only once, but that one time: spontaneous Christmas.

Any time a small child who was previously skittish or shy initiates play or affection—spontaneous Christmas.

There are endless opportunities for spontaneous Christmas to emerge from the woodwork of annoying everyday life.

Sometimes they are just for you and no one else—this sense that the universe is giving you a little wink and a smile.
